Jesus' Partnership Team

Did you know that Jesus had a financial partnership team for His earthly ministry?

“Soon afterward he went on through cities and villages, proclaiming and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with him, and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, and Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod's household manager, and Susanna, and many others, who provided for them out of their means.” (Luke 8:1-3)

Jesus put Himself in a position of humility to receive provision from others. He didn’t miraculously make food appear when needed, and He didn’t rely on His own skills as a carpenter to make money. He recognized the value of allowing God to stir hearts to give, and as a full-time minister He relied on God’s provision through people’s generosity.

The text lists several women, and seems to imply that they, along with many others, financially supported Jesus:

  • Mary Magdalene: She had been delivered from seven demons. Her profound gratitude for her transformation likely motivated her to support Jesus and His ministry. Mary Magdalene's significant role extended beyond financial support; she was also a dedicated follower and was present at Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection.

  • Joanna: The wife of Chuza, who was Herod's household manager, Joanna was in a prominent social position and had access to significant resources. Her name means “God is generous.”

  • Susanna: Although less is known about Susanna, she was likely from a prominent family as well.

  • Many others: This phrase, which is feminine in the original language, honors the large number of women who financially supported Jesus’ ministry. Mark 15:41 says that this is the same group of women who were present at the crucifixion.

Partnership development can beat against our pride, but as always, Jesus is our perfect example. Jesus' dependence on support shows that even the Son of God did not operate in isolation. Though He could easily have provided for Himself, God’s wisdom for His ministry was for Jesus to rely on the generosity of others.

This is the way the Father chose to provide for His Son. We’re in good company! When we raise partnership for ministry today, we follow in the footsteps of Jesus.
